SPA VISIT: DAPHNE STUDIO

Β

Last month I had the pleasure of visiting Daphne Studio in Nolita. It is the perfect downtown spa--whitewashed walls, chic floral arrangements, and an impeccable black and gold bathroom that I nearly moved into. Not only was it beautiful and serene, but they sell Biologique Recherche! No longer is a trek uptown necessary to score some P50. The entire line is available at the spa (including bottled placenta!!!), and the products are used for both face and body treatments. Treatments include traditional and oxygen facials, microneedling, body wraps and sugaring. For those out of the loop, sugaring is a natural form of hair removal designed as an alternative to waxing for sensitive skin. Daphne's formula uses a non-irritating mix of sugar, water and lemon juice.

I went with the oxygen facial for my first treatment. My aesthetician, Agnes, asked me about my skin concerns, and together we chose the best masks and serums for my skin type. I was prepping for a wedding weekend, so I wanted something to make my skin as glowy and clear as possible, while also addressing a recent sensitivity reaction on my forehead. We went with the purifying and brightening Masque Vivant mask, which is packed with yeast extract, witch hazel and cucumber. This is a best selling Biologique product--the live yeast extract has a fairly offensive smell (somewhere between Vegemite and subway urine), but includes amino acids and vitamin B that have incredible skin-clearing properties. On my forehead, the Masque Biosensible was applied for it's healing and soothing benefits.

The masks are then removed, and serums packed with hyaloronic acid and antioxidants are massaged into the skin. A vitamin C serum was included for that extra brightness. Pressurized oxygen is applied to the face, neck and chest using a futuristic pen-like apparatus, which may sound a bit scary but in practice feels amazing. An oxygen facial is a great option regardless of which masks and serums are used. The oxygen helps the serums penetrate the skin, increases moisture by acting as an emollient, and is incredibly soothing. The result? Incredibly moisturized, even and glowing skin. I didn't even flinch when visiting packed next-door neighbor Cha Cha Matcha completely makeup-less.

Daphne Studio, 375 Broome Street. Open daily, 11:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. For info and to schedule an appointment, visit http://www.daphne.studio or call 212.257.2310.

HALL OF FAME SUNSCREENS

SUNSCREENS COOLA / SHISEIDO / ANESSA / SUPERGOOP

Happy midsummer homies. Here are my favorite sunscreens as of late. As a recovering tanorexic, I've become obsessed with finding the perfect sunscreens over the past several years. With so many amazing self tanning and bronzer products out there, there's just no need to subject yourself to sun damage. If you're a believer in healthy living but don't care about protecting your skin, it's time to reevaluate. Preservatives probably won't kill you, but melanoma sure can. And don't we all want to be MILFs (and DILFs) someday?

I absolutely love the Coola Makeup Setting Spray. I have SPF in my BB creams and almost always wear a hat at the beach, but this is great for reapplication and to make sure your face and chest are completely covered. These are the areas with the thinnest skin and the first to show sun damage. And duh, it's your face--there's no hiding that shit. Made with green tea and aloe, it's super refreshing and can be spritzed right over your makeup. Daytime wedding or beachside Sunday funday? This will be your best friend. The Shiseido is a perfect "sport" formula (what's a sport?), SPF 50 and water resistant up to 80 minutes. Wear this for a day spent at the beach or pool, or anytime you know you'll be getting your sweat on. My favorite every day sunscreen is Anessa, which I picked up in Tokyo. It dries to an undetectable powder finish--no stickiness at all. Asians are serious about their sunscreen formulas and this is no exception. It's sold everywhere in Japan but unfortunately not in the US, however it is available on Amazon. Expect to either pay double for express shipping, or to wait over a month for it to arrive to the states. I've tried quite a few Supergoop products thanks to Birchbox, and really love this spray on "play" formula. It's not organic per se, but it's packed with antioxidants and there's nothing funky in the ingredient list. SPF 50 resistant and great for reapplications, as the spray makes it super easy to use in the middle of your day--so there's no excuse not to apply, even if you're a little tipsy on rose.

RECIPE: GAZPACHO

I was never a big fan of juicing (except R.W. Knudsen tomato juice, which creepily I could drink everyday). Juices often have a high sugar content, and leave out all that good fiber. A better solution for your next cleanse? Souping. Try to make a few batches of homemade soup, and make sure to steer clear of anything cream based (if you aren't the cooking type, Juice Press, The Splendid Spoon and Boulder Soup Works all make great fresh soups). Then stick to soups exclusively for 3-5 days. Or just replace a few meals if you're feeling less aggressive, whatever. It's a great way to lose a few pounds quickly and still get all of your nutrients in.

In honor of these dog days of summer, here's my favorite gazpacho recipe. I developed the recipe a couple of summers ago when I was away from New York and missing Westville's version (it's the best). I called several of their branches to try and beg the recipe--even just a few ingredients to start out--but alas they have some tight-lipped chefs over there. That or my enthusiasm led them to believe I was some weirdo pranking them. And so my own original gazpacho recipe was born...

  • 1 32 oz organic tomato juice
  • 2 medium to large tomatoes
  • 1 small yellow or Vidalia onion
  • 1 medium peeled jicama
  • 1 mango
  • 1/2 yellow or red bell pepper
  • 1 large peeled cucumber
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Pink Himalayan sea salt
  • Cilantro (optional but highly recommended)

Chop veggies to bite size. Combine all ingredients, cover and chill. Add more hot sauce or salt if desired. If too thick, add a bit more vinegar. Serve topped with avocado. Makes 6-8 servings.

PRODUCTS FOR A MARATHON PARTY WEEKEND

SUNGLASSES CHRISTIAN DIOR / EYE SERUM CHANTCAILLE / MASK SK-II / BRONZING TINT DR. HAUSCHKA / EYE BALM KATE SOMERVILLE / MASK TATA HARPER

Marathon weekend? Here are my favorite products for when you wake up feeling less than your best but you can't stop won't stop. Perfect to bring along for a bachelorette or a gorgeous three day summer weekend like this one. As soon as you wake up, you already know the obvious--drink a ton of water. Cleanse and then scare your housemates by applying a luxe hydrating cloth mask like the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask. If you need a little extra help for your glow, try a quick fix like the ubiquitous Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. Next, depuff and hydrate your undereye area. I am absolutely loving the instant cooling effects of the new Kate Somerville Goat Milk De-Puffing Eye Balm. It's like sleep in a gluestick. Another winner is the Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Eye Serum. With it's instant fine line and puffiness-reducing effects, it's worth the investment and feels like a little treat to apply (or maybe my life is just sad). Next, mix in a little of Dr. Hauschka's Translucent Bronzing Tint into your moisturizer for an instant bronzing effect. This product looks so natural and creates the effect of a subtle, super natural tan. And if all else fails, a chic pair of sunglasses always does the trick. You'll probably be needing them anyway.

FOODS TO AVOID FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN

Nutrition is one of the most important components of your healthβ€”and this includes your skin. In a previous post I discussed the foods that are great for your skin, so now I'll be a buzzkill and touch upon some of the foods that are not so great. To make up for being the bearer of bad news, I also included some better alternatives to soothe your cravings.

Β

Dairy is amongst the biggest culprits for hormonal acne. You can typically tell whether your acne is hormonal if you are a woman in your 20s-50s, and your breakouts are mainly concentrated in the perioral area (the chin and around the mouth). I have witnessed the transformation firsthand in patients that cured their moderate to severe hormonal acne solely by cutting out dairy. This correlation has been reinforced by studies executed by the American Academy of Dermatology, but the skeptic in you should still be wondering how this works. The simple reason dairy causes hormonal acne is due to the influx of hormones from the animal producing it. These are the natural hormones produced by cows, so organic dairy (read: healthier cows) actually tend to have even more of these inflammatory hormones than the generically raised type.

The good news is that you probably already drink almond milk and you've been over the froyo craze of the early aughts for a while now (you can even buy yogurt made from coconut water at Whole Foods!). But herein lies the problem: you f**king love cheese, because you're a human. Samesies. Luckily, there is somewhat of a workaround here. Goat cheese, while it does contain some of these hormones, contains a significantly smaller amount of them. Because goats are a similar size to humans, our hormone levels are also similar. There is also a considerably lower level of casein, the ingredient in milk that triggers milk allergies. As a bonus, goat's milk is also generally easier than cow's milk on the digestive tract, since it has smaller fat globules. If you think of how much fat a baby cow must need to grow into a full sized cowβ€”sometimes upwards of 1,500 poundsβ€”you'll start to get the picture. So next time go for the goat on that cheese plate, and enjoy in moderation.

Β

Reducing simple sugars in your diet can help with both aging prevention and acne. As explained by dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone, starchy or sugary foods are digested very quickly, and when this happens the glucose (sugar) molecules rush to bind to your body's proteins. This includes a skincare gal's very favorite proteinβ€”collagen. The converted collagen fibers eventually begin to all bind together, reducing skin's elasticity and glow. The rapid digestion of glucose also causes a spike in insulin, which is an inflammatory and common culprit for acne.

The glycemic index (GI) is a determinant of how much a particular food effects blood sugar, a measurement originally developed for diabetics. The β€œbad sugars” are ones with little to no fiber that are digested very quicklyβ€”white bread, potatoes, pasta and rice, fruit and carrot juice, sweets, and processed food. Most fruits and nearly all vegetables are okay in moderation, but be careful with grapes, bananas and tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple, which have a very high sugar content. Some foods you would traditionally think of as carby, such as slow cooked oatmeal, lentils and beans, get a thumbs up due to their high fiber content. Since the sugars in these foods are converted to glucose at a slower rate, they don't cause that spike in insulin that simple carbohydrates do. Replace your pasta with zucchini and summer squash in the warmer months and spaghetti squash in the winter, and I promise you will hardly miss it. An extremist would instruct you to cut out bread, but I think a super multigrain-y, fiber rich, and minimally processed slice every once in a while won't kill ya (you need a vehicle for your avo toast, after all).

Β

Coffee is probably the least offensive of the group, but definitely worth mentioning. It is both highly acidic and causes a diuretic effect. While the whole β€œalkalizing your body” craze has little to no scientific evidence (sorry Gwyneth), consuming something with a particularly high acidity does increase the production of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol controls your body's oil production, so consistently elevated cortisol levels can lead to acne. This is the same reason why stress can lead to acne, rosacea, and other skin conditions, since cortisol is also released during times of stress (don't forget to do your yoga). In addition, large quantities of coffee can be dehydrating due to it's diuretic effect. A better alternative? Switch to matcha, but don't consume with abandon. Matcha is a tea is made of the most superfoody green tea leaves, which are dried and then ground into a whole-leaf powder. A high quality matcha can contain nearly twice the caffeine levels of coffee. However, since it is digested over a much longer period of time, you won't feel that heart-racing feeling, and it has a much less significant effect on your cortisol levels. An added bonus: a wealth of glow-inducing antioxidants.

CURRENT ROUTINE: PM SKINCARE

CLEANSERS GLOSSIER & TATA HARPER / TONER BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE / EYE CREAM SHISEIDO / ESSENCE SK-II / SERUM SUNDAY RILEY / MOISTURE TATCHA

My current favorite nighttime routine, featuring a nice mingle of born and bred American bombshells and culty international products (you'll recognize some pretty faces from my recent Tokyo post). I'll go into more detail than usual since I've gotten some questions recently about the basics of my routines. Probably just people trying to be nice. Let's begin with the double cleanse. Considering my vested interest in being an early adapter in the skincare world, I depended upon my gel based cleansers to remove makeup for far too long. Enter Glossier's Milky Jelly Cleanser. I'm willing to be a lot of things about my skincare routine, but time-inefficient isn't one of them. As in, I will not devote two minutes to removing a cleansing balm from my face with a tepid cloth lest it's residue break me out. This is absolutely NOT a problem with this cleanser. I apply some on my eyes and then to the rest of my dry face and rinse it off, and all traces of makeup and oil have disappeared (and it smells incredible...I know rose scented and colored and flavored everything is 'yuge right now, but Glossier really gets it right). I then let Tata do her thing as my second cleanse. I can't imagine this cleanser ever leaving my rotation. It is the perfect thing for sensitive, acne prone skin.

P50 toner. To my knowledge the only places you can realibly purchase this cult product are Peninsula Hotel spas, and the only two in the States are in New York and Chicago (quite distressing to me as I order everything from aΓ§aΓ bowls to toilet paper to Manolos online). Via my first Via I trekked all the way to the Upper East Side, the land of Birkins and tourists, to score this cute little bottle. Believe it or not I have had this on my to do list for nearly six months, but since Barney's is back downtown and I no longer have any wedding related errands it took me forever to successfully execute this voyage. It was about $65 USD for the smallest size. Thus far I am very impressed. I perhaps should have purchased the formula for sensitive skin, but the aesthetician recommended I use it every other night (to avoid daytime redness), adding a little water to dilute. I have been using it for nearly a month now, approximately every other night. It does burn a bit, but I do not experience any significant redness--I could potentially use it during the day, but I like to use my most potent skincare products at night when my skin isn't exposed to as many toxins (cosmetics, sun, pollution). I spray my cotton pad with some rosewater beforehand and add 3-4 drops of P50. Perfect. Definitely a noticeable glow.

Anyone still reading? I now shake out 4 drops of SK-II essence on my (clean!) palm, touch my hands together briefly to warm the product, and gently press my hands onto my face. This is how the product has been applied forever by it's Asian fanbase. I have recently seen bloggers that promote the product and use it with a cotton pad, but this seems like a waste. I wrote in my last post that I haven't seen much of a difference using it, but my skin has been behaving recently and I definitely think this has something to do with it. Essence assists the rest of your products in working more effectively, so it would make sense. I then apply a pat of Shiseido eye cream with my ring finger (this assures the perfect amount of product and that you don't pull at the delicate skin in the area), and apply serum once the essence has dried. I rub Luna in until all the blue has disappeared, and apply a few sprays of this Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist for light summer moisture. This mist is absolutely incredible. I will write more about it in a near-future post dedicated to glowy skincare, but as a teaser: this is like a revolutionary moisturizer that you can just spray right over your makeup. And, spoiler alert: it imparts the most perfect, seductive, on-trend, dewy glow. And it LASTS.

Sweet dreams!

TRAVEL DIARY: TOKYO

Living in New York, it's pretty rare that I am truly floored by another busy, metropolitan city. This is not the case for Tokyo. Like New York, it's a work hard, play hard lifestyle. It's bustling and hectic but incredibly clean, the people are beyond polite, and the style is amazing. Just waiting for the subway you'll see high heels and girly dresses, a plethora of boyfriend-style trench coats paired with funky platforms, and vintage getups accented with designer accessories. No workout gear to be seen (including the chic mamas with strollers). And much to my delight, the women all seem to be skincare-obsessives, too. Yes, Tokyo is also a bit weird, but in a great way.

HALL OF FAME HIGHLIGHTERS

Considering I've branded this blog the GLOW-trotter, this is a pretty essential post: my very favorite highlighters. They play such an important role in natural and fresh beauty. Keep in mind that nearly all highlighters can be used in similar places: browbones, corners of the eyes, cupid's bow, cheekbones and down the bridge of the nose. However, through trial and error I have found I like certain highlighters in certain places. Start with your tinted moisturizer or foundation of choice (my current favorites are Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint and Chanel VitalumiΓ¨re Aqua) and you're ready to play.

Benefit Watt's Up is a creamy, champagne toned highlighter that dries to a powdery consistency. I like it applied to the corners of my eyes and at the browbones. MAC Prep + Prime in Bright Forecast is one of my holy grail products. I use it in a V-shape between my eyebrows, down the bridge of my nose and covering any redness under it, and in sideways little "v" shapes bracketing either corner of my mouth. Anticipating an entire day and/or night out of the house, I find this is pretty much the only thing I need to bring along with me for touchups. It is a true multitasker--it's neutral, sheer tone magically works for both covering my dark undereye circles as well as camouflaging spots. The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer is an amazing powder highlighter, perfect over or instead of blush at the cheekbones. It's versatile pale gold tone is pretty for any skintone. The most adorable award goes to the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer. It's a unique solid consistency that stays on all day and isn't exactly a shade as much as it is luminescence itself. I literally just use a pinky dab of this daily on my cupid's bow to draw attention to my upper lip. I've had it for quite a while now and haven't made a dent in it because it might just be made for this perfect little purpose.

And lastly, makeup or possibly just magic, the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. This is honestly like walking around all day with the angelic baby-faced Snapchat filter on your face. I just dust it lightly all over before walking out the door and somehow I bring the good lighting around with me, as the name promises. It's virtually undetectable but makes all the difference. #glowgoals

DOWN TO THERE

BATHING SUIT NORMA KAMALI / SCARF ALEXANDER MCQUEEN / SANDALS SCHUTZ / SUNGLASSES KAREN WALKER

My current favorite suit--so very comfortable and revealing in all the right places. In a series of less-than-fortuitous events, my DSLR camera broke before my trip to Puerto Rico, and the one day we were of sound enough mind for an iPhone photo shoot, it was cloudy. Let's just go with the overcast skies creating a more interesting backdrop for the otherwise basic beachside photoshoot.

TOKYO BEAUTY FAVORITES

My favorite beauty scores from Tokyo starring Shiseido and SK-II. From left to right: the Shiseido Benefiance W-Resist eye cream is a very well priced anti-aging product. I saw a difference overnight--it's rich but not too heavy for younger eyes, and completely erased any dry skin lines in my undereye area. The Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Cleansing Foam is perfect when you want an immediate glow--I love it before a night out when I want to remove a day's makeup, but only need a gentle cleanse without any particular treatment. The Shiseido lash curler is one for the hall of fame--super lightweight bestowing the perfect exaggerated curl. I found these for about $10 USD in Tokyo and available in all of the drugstores...stock up if you ever have the opportunity!

The SK-II selection was particularly exciting--I discovered several stores in Japan that offer the brand at 30% off AND tax free with a foreign passport. Within the country the products are also available online with domestic shipping for an even deeper discount, but these websites are in Japanese only. The story behind SK-II and it's cult following is based around it's main ingredient, Pitera. The anti-aging benefits of the ingredient were discovered in a sake brewery. The elderly brewers were found to have aged skin everywhere, except for markedly youthful hands where they had contact with components unique to the sake fermentation process. The magical ingredient was extracted, improved, standardized and bottled and alas a luxury skincare brand was born. Pitera is exclusive to SK-II and is packing with vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is the product that introduced the whole "essence" craze to the States, if not to the entire skincare world. This is the first essence I have used myself--a few drops sprinkled on the palms, rubbed together and pressed onto the face following your toner, but before anything else. It helps the face absorb any serums or creams following application. I can't say I've seen a huge difference immediately that I can contribute solely to the product (it's also ideally meant for thinner/drier skin types than my own), but if Japanese and Korean women swear by it, I'm sticking it out. I'll keep you guys posted. The SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion and cotton pads are a great anti-acne toner: both gentle and effective. The cotton pads feel super luxe and are absolutely the best I've tried, but I think they are only available as part of SK-II skincare sets. Perhaps the best for last: the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask. This is the one you've seen Chrissy Teigen wear on the plane (I do this too, don't hate). The price may seem absurd for a disposable cotton mask but the quality is so sturdy that it feels like something you could wash and reuse instead of throwing away. Cleanse your face then apply the mask and revel in the fun of looking straight out of Silence of the Lambs for 20 minutes. Then remove the mask, wipe off some of the excess serum but be sure enough is absorbed to really reap the benefits, and enjoy an immediate, significant glow.

I also wanted to include a photo of my favorite drugstore finds in Tokyo, which you can see below. Much of the descriptions are in Japanese, but top row to bottom row (minus the Nexcare) I tried a moisturizing mask, vitamin C mask, brightening mask, collagen mask and what seems to be a multitasking everyday sort of mask--my Japanese friend says she uses it for five minutes every morning before she does her makeup. I also stocked up on these Nexcare Acne Absorbing Patches (my best friend/fellow fanatic and I call them "pimple stickers"), which are available in the States via Amazon. Stick them on any blemish with a whitehead and it sucks up anything in there overnight, without drying your skin out at all--they are amazing.
